This is a navy blue 1920s silk slip made somewhere between 1920-1924. These days I'm excited to find anything from the 20s that isn't falling apart in my hands. The tag described it as a nylon 1920s slip (the problem with that is that nylon hadn't yet been invented wihen this was made). It has a great hand and feels like silk to me but it has bit of stretch and is kind of like a fine knit.
Dupont introduced a product called Fibresilk in 1920. Since I never knowlingly handled Fibresilk, don't know what that feels like.
This is a very thin but strong textile and easily passed the thumb test.
Now the story gets more interesting. The label is Julius Garfinkle & Co • Washington • New York. What's so interesting about that? Well in 1924 the store changed it's name to Julius Garfinkel.
So what have we learned: If it's a synthetic it couldn't have been made before 1920 and if this label is to be believed, it couldn't have been made after 1924. In either case, silk or not, this slip predates 1924.
The garment is lovely and has some color loss, but nice 1920s stuff or earlier is becoming very hard to find. I'm sorry this is so long.
